The Social Security Administration recently released a new website that can speed up the process of getting a new Social Security card. In certain cases, the entire process can be completed online with a new card arriving in the mail in 7-10 days. Even if a person’s request cannot be completed online, the new website may allow for the creation of documents that can speed up the process when visiting a local Social Security office.

The website starts by asking a series of questions to determine what options are available and how the person’s identity will be verified. A state-issued driver’s license is the preferred method for verification. If a person is eligible to complete the process online, they will be directed to the online application that, once completed, will allow them to receive a new Social Security card within 7-10 days.

If the application cannot be entirely completed online, the website will allow for an applicant to fill out an application and receive a control number. The website will then direct the applicant to print out the control number, and bring the control number, and any other needed documents, to their local Social Security office within the next 45 days to complete the process. The new Social Security card will then arrive in the mail as local Social Security offices do not issue new cards themselves.
